MATAWAN, New Jersey (WABC) -- The fears surrounding gun violence in schools is touching our area, as well.

Schools in Matawan and Aberdeen were open Friday, despite a threat made against the district.

Police said the threat was not credible, but it was enough for many parents to keep their children home as a precaution.

"It's hard, because you want them to go to school and be safe, and that little part of you says, stop, everything's safe...the police are there," mom Debbie Reinhold said. "But that little voice is saying, it could happen."

A police car was parked outside the building all day. Many students were frustrated by the threats.

"It's kind of stupid what people are doing," one said. "I'm guessing it was a joke that they made."

Still, many are scared about what seems increasingly like a realistic possibility.

"It's a little terrifying, honestly, to think that some people are so crazy that they make threats about things like this," a student said.

Students said attendance was noticeably down.
