Man killed, firefighters hurt in massive Long Island house fire
Kristin Thorne has the latest on a fatal house fire in Medford on Tuesday.

MEDFORD, Suffolk County (WABC) -- One person was killed and two firefighters were injured in a massive fire that tore through a home on Long Island late Tuesday.

The flames broke out just before 11 p.m. inside the home on Oregon Avenue in Medford.

The blaze spread quickly and caused part of the house to collapse.

After the fire was extinguished, the body of an adult male was located inside.

The man, identified by his daughter and neighbors as Neil Storan, was the sole resident of the home.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Suffolk County Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause.

He has two daughters, ages 16 and 11.

"He was just a good neighbor," neighbor Gail Vocht said. "We went to one another's barbecues. It's horrible to think he died like that.

Neighbor Vanessa Pavon said she was close to Storan and considered him like a brother. She said she spoke to him just hours before the fire broke out, when he called Pavon asking about where he should pick up some pizza.

"We didn't expect that to happen last night," Pavon said.

The two firefighters were transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but at this point, it is not considered suspicious.
