PATERSON, New Jersey (WABC) -- Moooove over, cars!

A cow was stopping traffic on I-80 in New Jersey around 3 a.m. Thursday.

The animal was on its way to a slaughterhouse when it made its break for freedom, jumping off the top of a double-decker transport truck eight feet down onto the highway.

It was found walking through the eastbound lanes in Paterson, forcing cars to move over.

It took hours for police to bring the more than 1,000 pound bovine under control.

"First one of the troopers tried to give it an arm lock around the neck and I understand he got rode down the road," said Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale. "One of our Paterson officers tried to lasso it, pulls it with the rope and now they're all getting dragged by the cow down the road, that didn't work out."

Police were eventually able to play cowboy and corral the cow off the roadway.

It will be brought to an animal sanctuary in Wantage.
