NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- At least one person was injured when gunfire erupted in Newark on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident was reported in broad daylight on Irvine Turner Boulevard around 1 p.m.

Sources say at least 15 shots were fired and gun was recovered from the scene. Police sources said a suspect was in custody being questioned.

The victim was shot in the leg and their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Wednesday's shooting happened just a few miles away from a fatal shooting less than 24 hours earlier.

Police are investigating those shootings at two separate locations that left one person dead and six others wounded.

Sources say an arrest has been made in Tuesday's fatal shooting, but the violence in New Jersey's largest city came up as Gov. Phil Murphy was talking about gun license fees in the state and a recent rash of gun violence.

"In fact, if anything, I think we gravitate toward the big awful tragedies and we ignore at our peril the day in day out drumbeat of gun violence, particularly in our urban communities, in communities of color," Murphy said.

Former mayor and current U.S. Sen. Cory Booker spoke out against the lack of urgency among national leaders when these shootings happen in minority neighborhoods.

"Seven people shot in my community, I wonder if other senators had people shot like that in their neighborhood whether that wouldn't be a lead national story," Booker said. "But I see the lives of low-income folks, lives of black and brown folks, when people are shot and killed, the world seems to keep going on."
