MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- A woman was hurt when she apparently fell through a sidewalk hole in Midtown Manhattan.

The incident was reported at West 35th Street and 8th Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Crews had been working underground nearby and a witness said a pedestrian fell about 5 feet down when a yellow plate over the hole gave way.

The FDNY said the 59-year-old victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in unknown condition, but she was conscious and awake and was not believed to be seriously hurt.

The part of the sidewalk where she fell has been taped off, but the yellow plate was placed back over the hole.

The investigation is ongoing to figure out who is responsible for the work and how it could have happened.

The Department of Buildings said there was a permit to work on a water main in the area. The city DEP said a private plumbing contractor had the permit to work there.
