Central Park car ban above 72nd Street goes into effect

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A ban on cars in Central Park above 72nd Street went into effect Monday.

Cars are already banned on weekends, but now they will also be banned on weekdays.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the ban earlier in June, which will also apply to parts of Prospect Park starting July 6th. In Central Park, most roads above 72nd Street will be closed to traffic.

The four crosstown transverses, which are all below Park level will remain open.

That means the drives in most of the park will be mainly for recreational use.

Cars were previously banned in portions of Central Park the last two summers.
