NEW YORK (WABC) -- The Long Island Rail Road's next generation of trains is way off track.

LIRR officials confirm they didn't set aside enough space to fit federally mandated crash-prevention equipment into 256 new trains, possibly increasing its cost and delaying its arrival.

The trains were expected to roll out in 2018.
