MAHWAH, New Jersey (WABC) -- A suspect wanted for fleeing police in New Jersey was taken into custody following a chase on Interstate 287.

The driver was sleeping in her SUV when a Ringwood police officer found her on Skyline Drive in Ringwood just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

She quickly drove away, police say, apparently striking the officer or his cruiser.

Police followed her onto Interstate 287, with other officers joining the pursuit.

Her SUV started smoking, and she finally pulled over in the highway's northbound lanes, near the New York State line.

She was taken into custody, charges are pending. Her name has not yet been released.

The police officer was not seriously hurt.

Lanes of Interstate 287 were closed through the morning commute before fully reopening at 9 a.m.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
