LONG BEACH (WABC) -- Police have confirmed that the swimmer found submerged Saturday night in the water off Long Beach in Nassau County died.

Long Beach police received a call at 6:30 p.m. for swimmers in distress at National Boulevard and Beach Front. One man was rescued shortly afterwards by an off-duty lifeguard and told them that his friend was in the water.

An extensive search and rescue was conducted utilizing the Long Beach Police Department, Long Beach Lifeguards, United States Coast Guard, Nassau County Aviation and the Nassau County Marine Bureau.

He was identified as Kashawn Carlos, 23, of Brooklyn, said police. Police said Carlos was located after being submerged for about an hour and he was taken to South Nassau Community Hospital.

At 6 p.m., all the swimmers were ordered out of the ocean when the lifeguards went off duty. Subsequently, police say the man chose to go back in the water and was caught in a rip tide.
