KENT, N.Y. (WABC) -- A small white terrier dog, possibly a Maltese mix, was found abandoned, severely ill and emaciated in a park women's restroom in Kent last Saturday.

A dog control officer was dispatched to the restroom in Pelton Pond after park employees found the dog inside a plastic crate in the restroom.

The 3- to 4-year-old terrier was found to be in a severe state of neglect after examination at the Carmel Animal Hospital.

Both of its ears are severely infected, and the dog's fur was heavily matted, causing it extreme discomfort and preventing it from defecating.

The dog is also unneutered and considered underweight.

Because of the dog's severe state of neglect and its apparent abandonment, the Putnam County SPCA is investigating this as a criminal case.

Officers ask that anyone with information as to the person(s) responsible for this contact the SPCA on their 24-hour Animal Cruelty Hotline at 845-520-6915, or through the SPCA website at SPCAPutnam.org.

All information will be kept confidential.
