LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan - It's not your typical Chinese restaurant. Nom Wah Tu in the Lower East Side is reimagining how New Yorkers experience Chinese food. Wilson Tang, the owner of Nom Wah Tu calls it his "bar concept." Tang said,"Bar and dumplings and alcohol. Anything that is great for a night out or pregaming for a night out."
Tang wants you to think of Chinese food like you would Spanish tapas. The dishes are small plates to be eaten as an appetizer or snack. They can be shared and you can order several items to enjoy as a full meal. He says you can come by and hang out out before a night out or come in for a late night snack.
Jonathan Wu, Nom Wah Tu's chef and partner served up quite a feast. The meal included pork soup dumplings, shrimp and snow pea leaf dumplings, and noodles with Chinese sausage. Wu explained his goal is to play with traditional dumplings and that included coming up with some fun sauces. "It's a labor intensive cuisine. It should be valued as such," Wu said. He also added, "It's New York Chinese food. In particular it's trying to connect with and shout-out the neighborhood." He hopes to open people's minds with his food. "This is artisinal, amazing handmade food," said Wu.
Mike Chau aka @foodbabyny, the mastermind behind an incredibly successful food blog and Instagram account recently took abc7ny on an eating tour that included a stop at Nom Wah Tu. Chau had no trouble chowing down on the food and called the noodles "amazing."
