Man charged in rape of 6-year-old

SPRING VALLEY Jose Luis Velasco-Morales faces two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, and single charges of first-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child.

The 24-year-old is being held on $250,000 bond pending arraignment.

District Attorney Thomas Zugibe says that one night two weeks ago, Velasco-Morales slipped into the girl's room and carried her into his own bedroom. The prosecutor says he raped her while covering her mouth with his hand.

When he heard the girl's mother calling for her, Velasco-Morales fled through a window, according to the prosecutor. The mother found her daughter, then followed the man and called police.
