Standoff in the Bronx

November 19, 2008 10:49:03 AM PST
A former federal prison guard held police at bay in the Baychester section of the Bronx Tuesday. The man was believed to be alone in the brick house at 2410 Eastchester Road. He reportedly refused to open the door for his parole officers and subsequently refused to let responding police officers inside.

The standoff, which started just after noon, continued into the late morning on Wednesday. Several streets surrounding Eastchester Road and Pelham Parkway were closed.

The suspect has identified himself as Joseph Principe, a former federal prison guard who was arrested and charged in a federal indictment.

He finally surrendered to police around 11:30 Wednesday morning.
