Firefighter beaten in Lower Manhattan

NEW YORK Matthew Dugan, 34, assigned to Ladder 15 near the South Street Seaport, is in critical but stable condition.

He's undergone two operations at New York Downtown Hospital.

Police say the assault happened just around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Authorities say Dugan and his girlfriend had been out drinking when the girlfriend apparently tripped near the ferry terminal. Two men and a woman nearby apparently thought the fall was funny, and that somehow sparked a confrontation.

Detectives say Dugan was hit in the head repeatedly by the two men and woman, who have still not been found.

Police are looking at surveillance footage to determine who threw the first punch.
