Tandem bikes for the blind

The Achilles Track Club created a new program that gives the blind a chance to experience something they would normally be able to do: the joy of hitting the pavement on a bike.

Artie Elefant started the Tandem Bike Team, an offshoot of the AchillesTrack Club, to pair sighted athletes with the visually impaired.

Each pair consists of a front rider, who is the captain, and the stoker, the back rider who is blind or visually impaired.

The team rides through Central Park every other weekend and there's plenty of opportunities to take longer bike rides through New York.

Anthony Green, the team leader, happily volunteers his time to the Achilles Tandem bike team and believes that its time well spent.

"It's been a wonderful new chapter in my life," said Green.
