Firefighters battled a fuel truck fire Sunday on Merrick Road in Massapequa, Long Island.

Police say the driver of the home heating oil truck heard a loud bang at 10:38 a.m., looked in his rear view mirror and saw flames coming from the rear of the truck.

A portion of the road was closed off by Nassau County Police, and nearby homes and business were evacuated as a precaution.

Parishoners at nearby St Rose of Lima Church and Grace Church were diverted and at least one Sunday Mass had to be cancelled as no one was allowed access to the church property.

Foam and hazmat units responded to the truck, which was carrying 3,000 gallons of home heating oil.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
