Young boys among 3 hurt in boat crash off Southampton on Long Island

SOUTHAMPTON, Long Island (WABC) -- Two young boys are recovering after a collision involving two boats off Long Island over the weekend.

The crash happened Sunday at about 9:50 p.m. in Seatuck Bay off Southampton.

Southampton Town police said two vessels -- a 26-foot Boston Whaler and a 19-foot Monterey -- collided about a half mile off shore.

"One boat was going straight ahead and the other boat kind of sideswiped the other one," Lt. Susan Ralph with Southampton Town police said.

One of the people on the boat called 911 to get some help.

Steven Hornstein of Woodbury was driving the Boston Whaler. He said in a conversation with Eyewitness News that the other boat -- driven by 81-year-old Robert Giordano -- came out of nowhere.

"We were following the channel very slowly," Hornstein said. "They came right into us. We saw them flying and tried to get out of the way. We couldn't get out fast enough."

None of the seven people on the Boston Whaler was injured. On the Monterey, three of the five people aboard suffered minor injuries, including two 10-year-old boys. One of the boys was thrown from the boat and then flown to a nearby hospital.

Southampton Town police said there's no criminality in the crash, and it appears to be accidental.

The U.S. Coast Guard also assisted in the emergency response and investigation.
