SHEAPSHEAD BAY (WABC) -- An 82-year-old man was stabbed Wednesday by a man he didn't know who wanted money in Brooklyn.
"If you come in here, I will be dead. Here's my heart. He want to put in my heart," said Mickel Kogan, the victim.
Wednesday afternoon, Kogan was innocently walking to his doctor's appointment in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn when he found himself inches away from getting stabbed in the heart. But at 82 years old, he was still strong and nimble enough to move just a few critical inches to the left.
"The bones saved my life," Kogan said.
The brazen attack happened right outside of the victim's apartment on E. 19th Street between Avenue Y and X. It was around noon and the block was empty.
Kogan says a man on his bike came up behind him and put him in a headlock and demanded money.
The two men struggled. The mugger eventually stabbed Kogan in the chest and then raced off. No money was taken.
Police quickly arrested 35-year-old Adam Smith. Eyewitness News is told he has been arrested 22 times already, beginning when he was only 11 years old.
"He said, 'I will kill you.' I said, 'Kill me? I'm not afraid, do it,'" Kogan said.
Kogan's son went into a panic when he got the call from police. In that moment of shock he misheard and thought they said dead when they said your dad.
"My father said, 'misunderstanding,'" said Shlomo Kogan, the victim's son.
"You don't be scared," Kogan said. "I was very v aggressive. I want to kill him with my hands."
