ASBURY PARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Police are searching for the thief who stole a work of art featuring an image of rock icon Bruce Springsteen in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Police say the item, about 30" X 24", was taken from a storefront property on Washington Avenue, sometime between Tuesday night and Thursday morning.

Asbury Park police, calling it a one of a kind piece of art, say the green and white image was cut into metal by a torch and is attached to wood.

The store features thousands of items for every kind of taste.

"A friend of mine made it for me," said the owner of the store Salvage Angel, Carolyn Curtin, who is a big Springsteen fan.

The thief jumped over the fence, taking the Springsteen piece.

"I hope that whoever has it, if they purchased it from someone who stole it from me, or the person who did steal it from me, can find their way to give it back to me," said Curtin.

The store is a treasure trove of items, covering about 20,000 square feet.

Springsteen's career began in the New Jersey shore city, where he frequently returns to perform.

The crime took place not far from The Stone Pony, where Springsteen made his name.

The neighborhood has its share of problems, but Carolyn says this is the first time she's been the victim of a theft.

"It's disappointing to say the least," she said. "I have no problem normally, no vandalism, no problems at all."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Asbury Park Police Department at (732)774-1300.
