Car crashes into home in Hicksville, homeowner hurt
Candace McCowan reports on the car crashing into a home on Long Island.

HICKSVILLE, Nassau County (WABC) -- It was a scary night for a family on Long Island after an SUV veered off the road and slammed into their house just as they were getting ready to go to bed.

The crash happened just before 10 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Bethpage and Woodbury Road in Hicksville.

The driver of the black Lincoln SUV was, for some reason, unable to stop, and went through the intersection, hitting a traffic light and then hitting the home.

Video showed that traffic light through the front window.

The 54-year-old homeowner was inside at the time and was hit by debris. He and the driver were both taken to the hospital but are expected to recover.

When the Avila family heard the boom, they already had an idea of what happened because it wasn't the first time.

The first incident happened seven months earlier when a truck hit the front door of the home in March. Their home sits at a busy intersection where traffic speeds by all day long. In both crashes, the drivers narrowly missed children inside.

It's not yet clear if the driver will face any charges, but the Avila family is fed up and is begging their landlord to install concrete polls to protect them.

They are also pleading with drivers to take it easy and remember that there is a family inside.
