Chase ends with crash on Upper West Side
Jim Dolan reports a vehicle trying to elude police ended up crashing on a sidewalk in front of a restaurant.

UPPER WEST SIDE -- A car jumped the curb in front of a restaurant on the Upper West Side Tuesday night after the driver had tried to elude police.

The accident happened at 68th Street and Columbus Avenue, where the vehicle ended up on the sidewalk.

Police say officers saw the car, a Mercedes, go through a red light earlier on Amsterdam Avenue at 64th street.

They pulled the driver over, without incident. As they were conducting the interview, the officers said they saw openly visible pills in the back of the vehicle and questioned him on it.

After asking what it was, police say the driver took off.

The vehicle was then spotted parked in the area of 67th and Columbus.

When officers approached the vehicle took off, hitting a cab. The suspects fled, leaving the car in gear. It then struck a pole holding up an awning.

The investigation is ongoing.

One person is in custody and police are looking for at least one more person.

There were no serious injuries.
