NEW YORK (WABC) -- U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced a push Sunday to prevent known or suspected terrorists from purchasing guns in New York State.
The push would allow New York to block terror suspects on the U.S. terror watch list from passing a gun background check and legally obtaining a firearm, something that is currently allowed under federal law and known as the "Terror Gap," said Cuomo.
Currently, the federal government does not directly share background check information with states, including New York, because the feds deem the list classified, according to the governor.
Schumer and Cuomo say that's a dangerous loophole. They asked the federal government to support their push and come up with a national plan that would close the Terror Gap loophole and bar individuals on federal terror watch lists from legally arming themselves.
