Toddler falls from window in Brooklyn
Stacey Sager reports from Borough Park, where a neighbor performed CPR on a toddler who fell out of an apartment window.

BOROUGH PARK (WABC) -- A 2-year-old girl was seriously injured after falling out of a window in Brooklyn, and authorities continue to investigate how the incident happened since window guards were in place.

The child fell from a third-floor window in Borough Park at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, and neighbors said the toddler may have been reaching for a toy.

And now, we're hearing more from the teenager who ran to help the toddler and performed life-saving CPR.

Choking back tears, 18-year-old Ashley Giron described the horrific situation on 44th Street.

Witnesses say the girl was not breathing afterwards, and before emergency responders could tend to her, Ashley sprung into action.

"I just started giving her CPR, and a few seconds later she took a deep breath," she said. "I wish the best of luck to the little girl for a speedy recovery."

Giron said she gave the girl mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions, then began consoling the girl's mother, who appeared to be frantic.

"She was screaming and crying," Giron said. "We were trying to calm her down, but as a mother, just horrible feeling for her."

The health department was at the scene Thursday, trying to figure out how the girl got through the window guards. There are small holes in the screen, but no one - including the building's super - seems to have any idea exactly what occurred.

Giron said she learned CPR on the internet and by watching TV.

"Honestly, I would watch a lot of soap operas like Grey's Anatomy and all that," she said.

Now, she's just praying the girl survives.

"Seeing her mother like that, it's not something you see every day," she said. "So it was definitely traumatic for me."

A woman who said she was the child's aunt identified the girl as Nygeana Civil. Many described the mother as loving and attentive.

"My prayers are with that family," a neighbor said.

The girl is listed in serious condition at Lutheran Medical Center.
