LOWER MANHATTAN (WABC) -- A 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by an oncoming train in Lower Manhattan during the Wednesday evening commute.

It happened at the Fulton Street subway station around 5:30 p.m.

Police say the boy was walking ahead of his 20-year-old mother, who was holding bags, and entered the platform area as the train entered the station.

His foot slipped off the platform, causing him to fall between the moving train and the platform.

He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"Our hearts break for the family, and the MTA is praying for them," NYC Transit President Andy Byford said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the crew of the train as well."

There were delays and multiple impacts to 2/3/4/5 train service immediately after the incident, but service later resumed with residual delays.
