NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City police said they believe a 23-year-old man smoked synthetic pot before he jumped off a pier in the West Village and drowned Wednesday.
The victim, who has been identified as Tymelle Simmons, jumped in off Pier 46, at West and Charles streets, just after 6:30 p.m.
A second man, who happened to be passing by, then jumped in to save him, but that man was unsuccessful and quickly got out.
Simmons was unconscious when he was pulled from the river and died at the Lenox Hill HealthPlex in Greenwich Village.
Police said there has been a "significant" increase in cases of "excited delirium syndrome" in people smoking synthetic marijuana, also known as "K2."
