EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (WABC) -- A Long Island man is under arrest, accused of murdering his wife with a dumbbell.

Nassau County police say 53-year-old Hector Bejarano is charged with second-degree murder.

The alleged incident happened around 4 p.m. on April 28 at the couple's Prospect Avenue home in East Meadow.

Officers responded to a report of an unconscious woman and found 52-year-old Mirian Bejarano lying on the floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Bejarano was arrested at the home. Their son lived in the basement, with other tenants living upstairs.

At the time of the murder, police said the community did not need to be worried.

"Our investigation has direction and focus," Nassau County Police Chief Kevin Smith said at the time. "We do not believe this to be a random act of violence."

Anyone with additional information on the case is asked to call 1-800-244-TIPS.
