EAST ORANGE (WABC) -- A medical examiner has ruled that the cause of death for a young mother and daughter in East Orange was "acute carbon monoxide poisoning."
The manner of death has been determined to be accidental.
29-year old Octavia Campbell and her daughter Christiana were found dead inside a home along Dodd Street just before 9 a.m. Wednesday.
They were found by the mother's boyfriend who came to their home when he was unable to reach Campbell on the phone.
Police, the Fire Department and EMS responded to the home, where police reported an odor of gas when they arrived.
PSE&G confirms the home's electricity was cut off on Tuesday for non payment.
The Essex County prosecutor's office says a gas generator was being used without proper ventilation.
Investigators did not find any sign of trauma or foul play.
However, the sudden loss has both loved ones and neighbors visible shaken.
"It's crazy," neighbor Chanda Cunningham said. "I've never seen that before. I actually asked the cops when they were in there, is this really what happens when something like this happens? And he was like, yeah. So it's the first time I've ever seen anything like this."
