Ice buildup disrupting East River ferry service

DUMBO (WABC) -- Ice buildup is disrupting ferry service, especially on the East River.

The East River is creating a long jam, which is why ferry service is suspended until further notice. Crews have been monitoring the ice and wind conditions since early Tuesday morning, and made the call to shut down service from the Dumbo ferry port around 6 a.m. As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, service remained suspended.

There are delays and changes to other popular service lines like Edgewater. A spokesman says large chunks of ice are dangerous because they could clog the ferry engines and cause them to overheat. Riders were sent text alerts to make other plans.

Monday and Tuesday were the first time some service lines were suspended on a weekday due to weather.

Crews will monitor the conditions hour by hour to give commuters the latest update on these conditions and any alerts moving forward through the evening commute as well.
