West New York parents concerned after students found with bedbugs

WEST NEW YORK (WABC) -- Health officials inspected a New Jersey school after a bed bug scare.

Parents became concerned after two students at Public School 4 in West New York had a bed bug on them when they entered the school.

Officials at the school Friday called the superintendent after a bed bug was discovered on a child.

The Board of Health was called in, and found a bed bug on another child.

The classroom was cleaned thoroughly and school officials were told there is no infestation in the school.

The bugs were found to have come in from the outside, health officials said, and letters were sent to the parents of the students involved.

The school was open Monday after the superintendent said there was no problem with bed bugs.

"What we do on a periodic basis as a precaution when school is not in session, Thanksgiving, Christmas, holidays, we do a fumigation of a lot of the schools," said schools superintendent John Fauta. "There have been incidents every once in awhile but in this case the bed bug was found and destroyed. I'm satisfied that it's not an epidemic."
