Sheepshead Bay church burns down for 2nd time in 11 years
Candace McCowan reports on the church fire in Brooklyn.

SHEEPSHEAD BAY, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A fire gutted a church in Brooklyn early Thursday morning, making this the building's second fire in only 11 years.

The parishioners at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Sheepshead Bay can't seem to catch a break: They were still trying to rebuild from a fire 11 years ago.

The fire spread through the church on East 23rd Street sometime before 12:30 a.m., and flames could be seen jutting out of its steeple.

The building was destroyed, and only a shell remains.

It's not clear if anyone was inside the church at the time, but no injuries were reported.

Fire investigators are determining the cause of the fire.

The church was under construction, and parishioners hoped to restore some community programs once it was finished. Now, they have to start over again.
