Part 2 of Sandy Kenyon's interview with Viola Davis of How To Get Away With Murder

NEW YORK (WABC) -- In a business that is obsessed by youth, Viola Davis stands out. Fame came late by Hollywood's standards - in her mid-40s. She went to New York City's famed Juilliard School for four years, then spent years trying to make her mark in minor roles. But it is what the star is revealing about her childhood that will make you appreciate her work even more. [br /][br /]Defense Attorney Annalise Keating is used to fighting hard for her clients, and she's tough enough to teach her law students "How to Get Away With Murder." Inside this forceful woman lie many secrets, but at her core, she is remarkably vulnerable. [br /][br /]As it is on screen, so it was at a recent luncheon of power players in Hollywood, where Davis spoke frankly about growing up in what she called "abject poverty."[br /][br /]"I've done everything to get food," she said. "I've stolen for food. I've jumped into huge garbage bins with maggots for food."[br /][br /]Her honesty had a purpose. [br /][br /]"It was very important for the cause that I'm involved in," she said. "I think sometimes you have to be the advocate for people who don't have a voice. Sometimes you have to be braver than usual, and you just have to put your testimony out there. And there is something liberating about that, there really is. I own it." [br /][br /]Davis said she uses her childhood, her background and some of those tough times in her work every day. [br /][br /]"Because life is what inspires art, life is a never-ending well of inspiration," she said. "It helps you create human beings, which I'm in the business of creating human beings. It's also made me very sensitive to other people's pain. I'm overwhelmed. I feel like God has his hand in my life from the very beginning, even when I didn't think that he did." [br /][br /]Davis is determined to give back, and likewise, she IS back Thursday nightS on "How to Get Away with Murder," which returned from its winter break as part of ABC's TGIT lineup.[br /][br /]In honor of her return, Eyewitness News would like to have a little fun with you by issuing a caption challenge?
