Uniforms for babies: Distinctive new clothing line
Lauren Glassberg has the story of a woman inspired by her father's uniform company.

JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- For parents looking for fun and unique clothing for kids, a local woman has developed her own distinctive fashion line for babies.

It's an adorable spin on her father's uniform stores. And now Blume Girl is hitting some major stores.

And entrepreneurs will tell you they get their inspirations from some crazy places. This woman got hers rather close to home, at her father's company. And her line of clothes didn't exactly start with baby items.

"The DNA of the brand is the name patch," said founder Stacey Blume.

Everywhere you look at Intapol Industries in Jersey City you'll see the patches because this is a uniform company where they've been outfitting folks around the country since 1959.

Larry Blumenfeld owns the company, and it was a little surprising when his daughter decided to snag some of those patches and put them on, of all things, thongs.

"Initially it was annoying. We have our police uniforms and our industrial uniforms, and then all of a sudden we've got ladies thongs in the middle of everything. It was quite a scene," said Blumenfeld.

And she was on to something.

"It's great for brides, anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine's Day," said Stacey Blume, who launched Blume Girl 11 years ago with undies. But more recently the company has grown in a different direction.

"It's been a natural progression. We were really popular and still are in the bridal market, brides and it's great for bachelorette parties and showers, and then brides eventually become moms and moms have babies, and baby's first uniform is a onesie," she said.

Blume Girl items are sold in boutiques like Doodle Doo's in the West Village, and Buy Buy Baby. And not everything gets a patch.

Some clothes are inspired by the ties worn by bus drivers. But as for those patches, they are customizable, so if you don't find exactly what you're looking for they'll make it.

"We have seen that a lot of our brides who had the personalized thongs, when they had their babies were back on Blumebaby.com, placing their orders for their baby items," said Stacey.

And Stacey has shipped her items around the world. Thongs start at $22, personalized onesies are $32 and a set of three bibs is $36.
