The family tried to make it to the hospital but had to pull over and deliver the baby in the parking lot of a Taco Bell.

OILDALE, Calif. -- This fast food restaurant doesn't usually do deliveries, but Tuesday was an exception.

A baby was delivered early in the morning outside of a Taco Bell, ABC affiliate KERO reports.

"I've never really heard of a case where a baby has been delivered in the parking lot of a Taco Bell at 2:30 in the morning," said Patrick Snowling, the fireman who was put in charge of the baby. "I'd say it was a pretty unique situation."

The new parents, Irving and Gladys Perez, were trying to make it to the hospital, but the baby couldn't wait. They pulled over, and the little boy was delivered in the passenger seat of the car with the help of firefighters and an ambulance crew.

Nevertheless, Snowling said, the new dad was overjoyed to meet his baby.

"He was kind of shocked and excited but at the same time he had a huge smile on his face that he couldn't walk off," Snowling said.

The family did not want to comment, and the hospital would not release information about how the mom and baby are doing.
