First babies of the New Year in the New York area
Darla Miles has the details on the first babies born this year in our area.

FLUSHING, Queens (WABC) -- A baby girl is the first of 2018 in New York City, arriving at 12:01 in Flushing Hospital in Queens.

"The due date was January 10th," new dad Imran Nazir said.

She was 10 days early, so baby girl Ariana has two titles -- a preemie at four pounds, eleven ounces AND the first baby born in New York City in 2018.

"It was a big celebration in the hospital all the doctors and nurses," Nazir said.

The delivery process started Saturday when the 25-year-old expectant mother checked into Flushing Hospital with contractions.

Thirty-six long hours later out came the bundle of swaddled sweetness.

"We are so excited to have our baby. And we are so happy for New Year's baby especially. And she's my first baby," mom Tania Shirin said.

In terms of the first baby of the New Year, it's the second time for Flushing Hospital. The first baby of 2017 was born there, too.

Out of sheer coincidence, the third baby of the New Year is also 10 days premature.

Joshua Miguel Brito was born at 12:25 a.m. at NYC Health + Hospitals Woodhull in Bushwick.

Mom says he already has a bit of swag.

"He's cute. He's adorable. He has a strong personality. He has his own little character already," Erica Hernandez said.
