Airman surprises girlfriend with proposal at Hunter College graduation

NEW YORK (WABC) -- There was a heartwarming surprise for a college graduate in New York City.

Nadiya Vengreniuk was on stage receiving her degree from Hunter College Thursday afternoon, when her boyfriend Pavel Auxtin surprised her on stage.

He's an Airman and made the trip from Colorado to be at the ceremony.

The good news doesn't stop there; He got down on one knee and proposed.

She, of course, said "Yes!"

"My legs were shaking! They're still shaking," Vengreniuk said.

"I was walking down and I thought I wasn't going to cry, I'm not a crier, but I was walking out and I almost started to cry so that was pretty difficult. But once I was up on stage, it was pretty easy, I already knew what I was going to say," said Pavel Auxtin, of the U.S. Air Force.

The two are high school sweethearts.

Pavel says their first step as an engaged couple will be moving closer to one another.
