Police: Woman found on Harlem sidewalk likely committed suicide

HARLEM, N.Y. (WABC) -- Police in Harlem investigating the death of a woman found on the sidewalk now believe she may have committed suicide.

The 39-year-old victim was discovered on Lennox Avenue just after midnight Tuesday.

Authorities initially thought she had been the victim of murder, but the medical examiner said her injuries were consistent with a fall.

Investigators now believe she jumped from a building.

The woman reportedly was emotionally disturbed and had a history of schizophrenia.

It is not clear what her mental state was at the time of her death.

Detectives have reclassified it as a death investigation and await autopsy results from the medical examiner's office.
