Mets on the menu at GG's
Lauren Glassberg has Neighborhood Eats from the East Village.

EAST VILLAGE (WABC) -- Bobby Hellen's grandmother raised him as a Mets fan in a Yankees community, and also taught him how to cook. Both passions are on display at GG's in the East Village, where there's a mix of salads, sandwiches and pizza.

The pizza does have a following and if you happen to be a Mets fan, you might notice mementos of the Mets and references on the menu. There's the Ron Darling pizza topped with smoked ham and pineapple, a tribute to Darling's Hawaiian heritage.

And there's the 1986, a salute to the last time that the Mets won the World Series. It's topped with spicy sopressata and fresh mozzarella. Pickled peppers and agridolce fennel adds both sweet and tangy notes, plus pieces and a dusting of pecorino and grana padina. The cooked pie is topped with arugula, which grows out back in the restaurant's garden.

You can finish it off with a Murphy's home run sundae, topped with cracker jacks and served in a Mets helmet, of course.

Below is the recipe for the 1986 pizza:

300 grams of dough

50 g pickled peppers

30 g fennel

150 g mozz cheese

3 table spoon grano padano

3 table spoon pecorino

1 table spoon Oregano

1/2 table spoon chili flake

65 g sopressata

Stretch dough to a 12 inch round.

Start by covering the whole surface with mozzarella. Tear the slices to fit in the smaller spaces. Then top with sopressata, pickled peppers and very thinly sliced fennel. Sprinkle with a mix of pecorino, grano padano, chili flake and oregano and bake until crust is golden.

Remove from oven and top with fresh arugula, olive oil, lemon and more pecorino.
