Brooklyn man who traveled to Mali tests negative for Ebola at Bellevue

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A Brooklyn man tested negative for Ebola at Bellevue Hospital Thursday.

The man was transported by an FDNY Haz-Tac unit after exhibiting symptoms consistent with the Ebola virus.

The man, 56, returned from Mali over the weekend. Health officials say the patient will remain in isolation and will have further Ebola tests in the coming days to confirm the negative result.

He was checked out for flu like symptoms by a private doctor connected to Interfaith Medical Center Wednesday and sent home.

But he called 911 Thursday morning complaining of fever, body aches and nausea. He was picked up at his home at 8:22 a.m. by a FDNY Haz-Tac unit, as per city protocols.

In a joint statement, the New York City Health Department and Health and Hospitals Corporation said "An individual who came to the United States from Mali, a country with limited Ebola transmission, was taken to HHC Bellevue Hospital Center today. Due to the individual's travel history and symptoms, the patient has been isolated, and an Ebola test will be performed."
