Thank you notes cover sidewalk outside Clinton campaign headquarters in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS (WABC) -- Children and families used sidewalk chalk to write thank you notes to Hillary Clinton outside campaign headquarters.

It was their way of coping with a devastating loss, and they posted it on Twitter.

"I think everybody has been coming here because they are just absolutely devastated. I've never seen the city and such morning since 9/11. I just feel like they can't wake up from this. They woke up from a nightmare," said Patrice Mack, a supporter.

Social media is not just a battle ground, for some it's a place to spread the message of unity.

Margot Gerster posted her story on Facebook.

The Chappaqua mom happened to bump into Hillary and Bill Clinton and their dogs during a hike to clear her mind about the result; she suspects they were doing the same.

"Honestly, I think she seemed as well as anybody could be expected after, you know, such a crazy, crazy experience," Gerster said.

It's the first time we're seeing Clinton since her concession speech.

People have reacted to this photo more than 80,000 times.

Gerster, speaking to CNN said that she told Mrs. Clinton one of her proudest moments as a mother was taking her daughter Phoebe to vote for her.

"I can't speak to how she was feeling on the inside, but she couldn't have seemed any nicer or kinder and gracious to me. You know, I think it was a very dark day for a lot of people yesterday. So this was a very hopeful encouraging moment for me," Gerster said.

Some walking over this sidewalk writing say the spirit of these words too is encouraging.
