FOREST HILL (WABC) -- The search is on for a hit and run driver who struck a man in Queens, leaving him critically injured.

Authorities are looking for a burgundy Jeep with New York license plates that left the scene of the accident just after 10 p.m. Sunday.

The victim, in his 30's, was crossing the street to go to a Stop and Shop on Union Turnpike in Forest Hills.

People who live in the area say Union Turnpike is known for speeding cars, whizzing by at all hours of the day.

A number of people described hearing a loud crash. "I heard a loud impact, sounded like metal on metal, very loud noise, I thought it was a car hitting a container," said one witness. "Then security called me and said somebody was hit in the front of the building."

The victim is in critical condition at Jamaica Medical Center.
