Jersey shore kicks off summer season on Memorial Day weekend
Toni Yates reports on the kickoff to summer at Point Pleasant Beach in New Jersey

POINT PLEASANT BEACH (WABC) -- The Jersey Shore is marking this Memorial Day with its first significant comeback since Superstorm Sandy hit more than a year ago and devastated the area.

And businesses are counting on Monday being a carbon copy of the weekend.

There were people as far as the eye could see along Point Pleasant beach on the first Sunday of the summer season, and shops and restaurants stayed open until after the sun went down.

Families packed the boardwalks to play games, ride the rides, shop and just enjoy the weather and outdoor activities.

The water was a bit cold, but that didn't stop beachgoers from working on their tans and cooling off in the slightly rough surf.

Rebuilding continues after the storm ravaged the state 19 months ago, and residents and business owners couldn't be happier to bid a final farewell to the frigid winter and welcome back the warmth --and tourists -- of summer.
