Innocent bystander shot in the Bronx

FORDHAM (WABC) -- An innocent bystander was shot in the Bronx, and the victim's son is speaking exclusively to Eyewitness News.

It was one stray bullet that ripped through the chest of 49-year old Sabina Montano, and at the same time ripped out the hearts of her family.

Her 26-year old son Francisco said through a translator, "We are in shock, we are all very nervous, very scared."

The hairdresser and mother of six was walking to evening mass and to grab a few items from the church's food pantry when a bullet pierced below her rib cage, struck her stomach and her pancreas and went out the side of her body.

"Thanks to God she is doing much better. She is talking, she can talk a little bit," said Francisco.

Police say two rival groups got into some type of dispute at the intersection of East 180th and Tiebout Avenue when they opened fire.

And they say they knew what was going on immediately thanks to the new shot spotter technology.

"The people, they started running. They were very very scared," said Francisco.

Police are still trying to identify the shooters, and the family wants the suspects to know what this has done to their family, who recently started going to the food pantry to help make ends meet.

"This is unfair. This is an innocent person who wasn't looking for any problems, who took a bullet for nothing," said Francisco. "And no one saw anything and no one knows who did it. The person responsible needs to pay for what they did."
