NEW YORK (WABC) -- Seinfeld made him rich, but Larry David became a big star in the years after the series left prime time so it won't come as too much of a surprise a play he wrote became a big hit after he agreed to star in it. Now Larry is leaving, and a very familiar face is taking his place.
Broadway brought them back together: Jason Alexander was reunited with his old colleague years after they made TV history in the show Larry David created with Jerry Seinfeld.
I asked him after all those years on Seinfeld whether Larry called personally to offer him the role in Fish in the Dark.
"No. He wouldn't do that because he couldn't take the potential for rejection if I said 'Nah I'm not doing that'. He couldn't take that so he had an emissary," Alexander said.
The two are friendly, but don't see each other that often.
"I don't hang out with anyone who doesn't live within four blocks of me. What do you think I drive to see people? No, that's not the way it works. You're friends with who lives in your neighborhood and that's it," Larry David said.
In the years since "Seinfeld" went off-the-air, David has become a star and the play he wrote called "Fish in the Dark" has been grossing a million dollars a week. Jason Alexander is taking over the lead role from him.
"He's relaxed into it," Alexander said.
"I'm sensational," David said.
"He's fantastic. I'm stealing everything by the way. Every move he makes, I'm stealing it. I shaved my head just to have an approximation," Alexander said.
Laughs turned to frowns earlier this spring at the Cort Theater when cast member Rita Wilson was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy during the run, coming back to the show earlier this month.
"I just couldn't believe she returned with such joy and such gumption. She was just ready to rock and it was really, really inspiring," Rose Perez said.
Wilson's contract ends before Alexander takes over, but he caught her performance.
"You would never believe that this woman went through what she went through a couple of weeks ago," Alexander said.
Rita Wilson giving new meaning to the old phrase "the show must go on" by returning to play the wife of Larry David's character in "Fish in the Dark." Broadway actress Glenn Headley takes over for her opposite Alexander the first week in June.
