HUNTINGTON, Suffolk County (WABC) -- Police say they have arrested the man who sexually assaulted a teenage girl at random on the street in Suffolk County.

Suffolk County police say Daniel Adum 19, of Huntington Station was charged with first degree criminal sex act and second degree aggravated sexual abuse.

The attack happened just after 1:15 a.m. Sunday in Huntington.

Police say the 16-year-old girl was with a friend on Prospect Street, just off Main Street, when a man sexually assaulted her.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say cameras on Prospect Street captured the attack.

"He grabbed the one girl, was able to knock her to the ground. Her friend was able to get away and go for help but unfortunately it was a little too late," said Suffolk County Chief of Detectives Gerry Gigante.

Police say Adum was on the prowl, just looking for a victim, and the teens were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It is troubling to residents and those who work in the area because the village of Huntington is usually bustling on the weekends and perceived as safe.

"There's always cops around, the precinct's so close, so for something like that to happen around here, that's a little shocking," said pedestrian Christina Guerrero.

Police say they tracked Adum with surveillance pictures of his car, a white Honda with a distinctive black stripe.

But they also say his alleged victim kept her composure and was able to make a thorough description, making a huge impact on the speed of the investigation.

"I can't imagine after what she went through, with a physical assault and a felony of this nature, that she was able to give us a terrific, accurate description and cooperate with detectives fully," said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart.

Police say Adum had no priors and had been working as a busboy at a country club until last year. His bail was set at $150,000.
