Man injured while exploring underground tunnels in Clifton

CLIFTON, New Jersey (WABC) -- A man was rescued after becoming injured while exploring a series of underground tunnels in Clifton, New Jersey.

The victim was pulled from the tunnel, off Paulison Avenue, just before 1 a.m. Friday.

The 21-year-old from Port Reading, NJ was exploring the series of tunnels and sewers known locally as the "Gates of Hell."

The tunnel system is mostly a drainage run-off for a nearby stream called Weasel Brook, but tales of curses have lured amateur explorers.

The person was lifted from the tunnel and taken to University Hospital in Newark with various injuries.

It was determined that he had fallen down approximately 20 feet down from a slope of rocks and landed near a storm drain, injuring his head and other parts of his body.

However, the area in which the injured party landed was extremely difficult to access, police said.

Eventually with the assistance of the Clifton Fire Department the man was extracted and taken to the hospital..
