NYPD gets workout during bust NYC weekend

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Police will have their hands full this weekend.

Along with the 50,000-plus runners and countless spectators converging on the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon Sunday, the department will police the Village Halloween parade Saturday, three (possible) World Series games at Citi Field in Queens, and prepare for a visit from President Obama Monday.

Nearly 2,000 officers will be deployed along the marathon route Sunday, including helicopters, bomb sniffing dogs and boats patrolling the route.

There are no specific threats against the Marathon this year, police said.

The NYPD played through hypothetical scenarios during a "tabletop" exercise at police headquarters in Lower Manhattan Thursday.

"So in today's tabletop typically you'll see a car careen out of control, a gun battle in the streets that turns into a hostage situation along the route, perhaps an IED (improvised explosive device), more things than would ever happen at any single event," said NYPD Deputy Commissioner John Miller. "You layer on different situations and more agencies have to come together ..."

Miller said there are "contingency plans" in place that include slowing the race down and changing the route in case of an emergency.
