Memorial Day travel underway in New York area
Derick Waller reports on the Memorial Day getaway in the New York area.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- People are heading out for the holiday weekend as we count down to the unofficial start of summer.

If you're lucky enough to have the day off, hopefully, you got a jump on your travel.

AAA says the worst time for travelers is Friday afternoon when as many people tried to leave work early. They say congestion will be three times as bad as normal.

Nationwide, a record 43 million Americans are planning to do some traveling this weekend, including 37 million people who plan to drive to their destination.

Gas prices have gone up about 30 cents in the last two weeks to just under $3 a gallon, but that's about where it was last year around this time.

The Port Authority says six million people will travel through their bridges, tunnels and our three major airports this weekend.

At LaGuardia Airport, the Q70 bus is free all weekend, and the PATH station at the World Trade Center will remain open, despite recent construction that had it closed.

If LaGuardia Airport is your destination, there is a ton of construction going on and traffic on the Grand Central Parkway is always a wild card as well. So give yourself plenty of extra time.
