FLUSHING (WABC) -- Mets fans gave the team a heroes welcome as the team arrived home Thursday after sweeping the Cubs in the NL Championship Series and reaching the World Series.
Amid chants, cheers and screams, the conquering heroes made their return, buses pulling into Citi Field carrying the newly crowned National League Champions. Next stop: the World Series.
"More excited for this city, this fan base, this organization," said Mets third baseman David Wright. "We've all waited a long time for this and for it to finally come to fruition is well worth the wait and well worth everything we've been through."
The Mets touched down at JFK at around 2 p.m., a short flight from Chicago, which followed a long night of celebration, by the players and the diehards, many who spent the entire day at Citi Field, fans with names like Pinman, Sign Guy and CowbellMan.
"It's an incredible team. I think now it's grown as a family, I think they've peaked at the right time and I see a lot of special things happening in this World Series," said Mets fan Eddie Boison.
"It's a feeling, it's hard to describe, it's like all the years that you put into it and it all comes to the top all at once. It's a great feeling," said Mets fan Nick Giampietro.
For the Mets and their fans, a few days to enjoy the first National League pennant in 15 years..pure joy after so many frustrating seasons.
"I am over the moon excited. I was at Modell's at 12:30 in the morning buying shorts. What can I tell you, nuts," said Mets fan Ellen Schuerger.
