NEW ROCHELLE (WABC) -- One person is in custody after several shots were fired Tuesday near a day care center in New Rochelle.

Police say the shots were fired at about 1 p.m. Tuesday between two SUVs near the facility on Clinton Avenue. Investigators believe the incident may involve two individuals who knew each other.

No children were hurt. The glass of at least one of the cars was shot out. It is believed that one vehicle pulled up the other and fired multiple shots.

Both the vehicles took off, and a short time later a victim walked into Mount Vernon Hospital with gunshot wounds to his left shoulder and left arm.

Police believe he is connected to the shooting incident.

Police spotted one of the vehicles involved and followed it onto the Saw Mill Parkway.

A passenger bailed out on Coyle Place while the car kept going. Officers pursued him on foot and held him at gunpoint. The suspect was taken into custody and taken to Westchester Medical Center with a leg injury. A weapon was recovered.

The car and the driver remain at large.

The day care center says the shooting happened during nap time, but it is not clear whether the kids had any idea what was going on.
