NEWARK (WABC) -- The prisoner who escaped from a guarded hospital room in Newark is back in custody Friday.

Authorities say 46-year-old Elijan Shabazz, who was under police guard by two officers, was able to get out of University Hospital in Newark back in March. He was admitted for inpatient treatment after complaining of chest pains.

But when doctors and officers went into his room around 11 a.m. the next day, Shabazz was gone.

The hospital was put in lockdown for more than two hours, and only patients entering the building for treatment were allowed in.

An extensive search was conducted by the Newark police and Rutgers police departments, as well as hospital personnel, but Shabazz was not found for weeks.

Shabazz was in prison for robbery, burglary and resisting arrest. He will now face additional charges.

At this point, it is not clear how or where he was found.
